Postsubmaximal isometric full squats significantly enhance jump height in trained men. This postactivation performance enhancement effect was observed starting 3 minutes after the conditioning activity and lasted for at least 6 minutes.
Area of Science:
- Sports Science
- Exercise Physiology
- Biomechanics
Background:
- The postactivation performance enhancement (PAPE) phenomenon describes the acute improvement in muscular performance following a bout of fatiguing, high-intensity activity.
- Isometric exercises, particularly squats, are increasingly explored as conditioning activities to elicit PAPE effects.
- Understanding the optimal parameters for isometric conditioning for potentiation of explosive movements like jumping is crucial for training program design.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of a postsubmaximal isometric full squat conditioning activity on subsequent jump performance in resistance-trained men.
- To determine the time course of any observed potentiation in jump height following the isometric squat protocol.
Main Methods:
- Forty-five resistance-trained men (aged 20-27 years) with at least 6 years of continuous training experience participated.
- Participants performed a baseline countermovement jump (CMJ).
- The experimental group (EG) underwent a conditioning activity (CA) of three 4-second isometric full squats at 70% of their 1-repetition maximum, with 1-minute rest intervals. The control group (CG) did not perform the CA.
- Jump height was measured at multiple time points up to 9 minutes post-CA.
Main Results:
- A significant difference in jump height was found between the EG and CG (p < 0.0001).
- The EG demonstrated significantly higher jump heights at 3, 5, 7, and 9 minutes post-CA compared to baseline (p < 0.05).
- Jump height improvements in the EG began at 3 minutes and persisted for at least 6 minutes post-conditioning activity.
Conclusions:
- A submaximal isometric full squat conditioning activity can effectively enhance countermovement jump height in trained men.
- The potentiation effect on jump height is evident from 3 minutes and sustained for a minimum of 6 minutes post-exercise.
- These findings suggest that incorporating specific isometric squat protocols can be a viable strategy for inducing postactivation performance enhancement in explosive power.
