School health education programs positively impact students' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAP) regarding physical activity and nutrition. While KAP improved, behavioral outcomes showed mixed results in this systematic review.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Health Education
- Nutrition Science
Background:
- School-based health education offers opportunities to enhance student learning.
- It aims to improve knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAP) related to physical activity and nutrition.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review evidence on school-based health education interventions.
- To assess the impact on students' physical activity and nutrition KAP and behaviors.
Main Methods:
- A two-phase systematic review was conducted (2010-2018 for reviews, 2010-2020 for individual articles).
- Included 20 randomized controlled trials and 23 quasi-experimental studies.
Main Results:
- Interventions showed favorable impacts on students' physical activity and nutrition KAP.
- Behavioral outcomes and secondary results like BMI were mixed.
Conclusions:
- Evidence-based strategies from this review can enhance student KAP and behaviors.
- Further research may be needed to clarify impacts on specific behaviors.
