Summary

Simulation-based education significantly improved nursing students' knowledge and attitudes toward Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals. This approach offers a safe environment to prepare nurses for providing unbiased care to the LGBT population.

Background:

Growing recognition of unique healthcare needs within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) population.
Nursing education often lacks sufficient opportunities for direct patient care experience with LGBT individuals.
Simulation offers a controlled environment to bridge this gap and foster open-minded nursing attitudes.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and implement a simulation-based training program for nursing students focused on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) care.
To assess the impact of simulation on nursing students' knowledge, general attitudes, and nursing-specific attitudes towards the LGBT population.
To gather foundational data for integrating LGBT nursing education into the curriculum.

Main Methods:

A single-group pre-post experimental design was employed with 57 senior nursing students.
Participants completed assessments of LGBT knowledge and attitudes before and after engaging in a simulation scenario.
The simulation included discussions on coming out, sexual health, and supportive nursing care for LGBT individuals.

Main Results:

Simulation-based education resulted in a statistically significant increase in participants' knowledge regarding LGBT health issues.
A significant improvement was observed in nursing attitudes towards providing care for the LGBT population post-simulation.
No significant change was found in the general attitude towards the LGBT population.

Conclusions:

LGBT education utilizing simulation is a potentially effective strategy for enhancing nursing students' and nurses' preparedness and concern for the LGBT population.
Future educational programs may benefit from incorporating more detailed insights from both LGBT individuals and healthcare providers.
Integrating comprehensive LGBT education into nursing curricula is essential for promoting inclusive and equitable healthcare.
