Flexible sigmoidoscopy criteria reliably predict the need for follow-up colonoscopy in young patients with rectal bleeding. These criteria, based on initial flexible sigmoidoscopy findings, can be safely used in routine clinical practice.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Colorectal Cancer Screening
- Diagnostic Endoscopy
Background:
- Young-age-of-onset colorectal cancer incidence is rising, often presenting with rectal bleeding due to lack of screening.
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a suitable initial investigation for rectal bleeding in patients under 50, as most cancers are left-sided.
