    Summary

Extended field radiotherapy significantly improved relapse-free survival for Kaposi's sarcoma patients compared to local field radiotherapy. Radiotherapy remains an effective treatment option for most Kaposi's sarcoma cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Radiation Oncology

    Background:

    • Kaposi's sarcoma is a neoplastic disease affecting the skin and visceral organs.
    • Radiotherapy has been a cornerstone in managing Kaposi's sarcoma.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of local field versus extended field radiotherapy in treating Kaposi's sarcoma.
    • To analyze relapse-free survival rates based on radiotherapy techniques.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 91 Kaposi's sarcoma patients treated between 1958 and 1983.
    • Comparison of outcomes between local field radiotherapy and extended field radiotherapy (single 8 Gy fraction).

    Main Results:

    • Extended field radiotherapy resulted in a higher complete remission rate (38/56) and relapse-free survival (24/56) compared to local field radiotherapy (17/27 complete remission, 6/27 relapse-free).
    • Actuarial relapse-free survival significantly favored the extended field technique.
    • Patients with pre-existing immunosuppression showed similar response rates to radiotherapy.

    Conclusions:

    • Extended field radiotherapy is a superior technique for improving relapse-free survival in Kaposi's sarcoma.
    • Radiotherapy is an effective treatment modality for the majority of Kaposi's sarcoma presentations.
