Equity Theory01:26

Equity Theory

131
Equity theory explains how our sense of fairness influences the dynamics of close relationships. Rooted in social psychology, the theory posits that individuals evaluate fairness by comparing the ratio of their contributions to the rewards they receive. Relationship satisfaction is highest when these ratios are perceived as balanced between partners, promoting mutual reciprocity and a sense of justice.Equity vs. Equality in RelationshipsEquity is distinct from equality. Fairness does not...

Contingency Table01:29

Contingency Table

3.4K
A contingency table provides a way of portraying data that can facilitate calculating probabilities. It is a method of displaying a frequency distribution as a table with rows and columns to show how two variables may be dependent (contingent) upon each other; The table helps determine conditional probabilities quite quickly and can help systematically organize, analyze and quantify data. The table displays sample values concerning two variables that may be dependent or contingent on one...

Test for Homogeneity01:23

Test for Homogeneity

2.2K
The goodness–of–fit test can be used to decide whether a population fits a given distribution, but it will not suffice to decide whether two populations follow the same unknown distribution. A different test, called the test for homogeneity, can be used to conclude whether two populations have the same distribution. To calculate the test statistic for a test for homogeneity, follow the same procedure as with the test of independence. The hypotheses for the test for homogeneity can...

Factors Affecting Illness01:18

Factors Affecting Illness

4.8K
When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness,...

Kruskal-Wallis Test01:19

Kruskal-Wallis Test

1.1K
The Kruskal-Wallis test, also known as the Kruskal-Wallis H test, serves as a nonparametric alternative to the one-way ANOVA, offering a solution for analyzing the differences across three or more independent groups based on a single, ordinal-dependent variable. This statistical test is particularly valuable in scenarios where the data does not meet the normal distribution assumption required by its parametric counterparts. Kruskal-Wallis test is designed typically to handle ordinal data or...

Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test01:21

Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test

486
The Wilcoxon rank-sum test, also known as the Mann-Whitney U test, is a nonparametric test used to determine if there is a significant difference between the distributions of two independent samples. This test is designed specifically for two independent populations and has the following key requirements:

Summary

Communities with high poverty and more people of color experienced higher Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) positivity rates. Disparities in testing were found for communities of color, highlighting the need for equitable resource distribution.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Individual COVID-19 case data indicate population-level impacts.
  • Community-level factors and testing variations require further investigation.
  • Understanding geographic disparities is crucial for pandemic response.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess community factors associated with COVID-19 testing and positivity.
  • To analyze socioeconomic status (SES) and racial disparities in Seattle, King County during July 2020.
  • To identify vulnerable communities for targeted interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Multivariate Poisson regression analysis.
  • Examined census tract-level data for COVID-19 cases and testing rates.
  • Controlled for socioeconomic indicators and community demographics.

Main Results:

  • Higher COVID-19 positivity rates linked to poverty and high proportions of people of color.
  • Identified testing disparities affecting communities of color and those with transportation barriers.
  • Socioeconomic status indicators correlated with COVID-19 risk.

Conclusions:

  • Tract-level indicators can identify COVID-19 risk and vulnerable populations.
  • Ensuring equitable access to testing, information, and vaccination is essential.
  • Addressing disparities in low-SES and diverse communities is critical for pandemic control.
