    Summary

    Interferons may regulate normal skin growth. This study found interferon-alpha in the proliferative compartment of human epidermis, suggesting a role in physiological skin growth modulation.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and localization of interferon-alpha in normal human epidermis.
    • To explore the potential role of interferon-alpha as a physiological modulator of epidermal growth.

    • Indirect immunofluorescence using polyclonal antibodies to recombinant human interferon-alpha.
    • Viral plaque inhibition assay to detect interferon activity in keratinocyte extracts.
    • Western blotting to identify interferon-alpha-related proteins in epidermal extracts.

    • Interferon-alpha antibodies specifically stained the proliferative (basal) compartment of normal human epidermis and cultured keratinocytes.
