Background:

  • Universities transitioned interprofessional education (IPE) to virtual formats, demonstrating comparable outcomes to in-person delivery.
  • This study includes 5 distinct healthcare programs: occupational therapy, dietetics, nursing, athletic training, and speech-language pathology (SLP).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the perceptions of 106 students participating in a virtual IPE activity.
  • To add to existing literature by incorporating multiple disciplines and identifying discipline-specific attitudes.
  • To inform future interprofessional education curriculum development.

Main Methods:

  • Participants completed reflective essays after a virtual case study IPE event.
  • Thematic analysis was employed by four researchers to analyze the reflective essays.

Main Results:

  • Four key themes emerged: beneficial learning, role understanding, group dynamics, and logistics.
  • While the virtual IPE was perceived as beneficial, logistical issues and participation levels negatively impacted perceptions.
  • Dietetics students reported the most positive comments (70%), while nursing students reported the least (48%). Undergraduate students expressed more positive comments than graduate students.

Conclusions:

  • Virtual IPE is beneficial for holistic care and prepares students for clinical practice.
  • Logistical challenges, including large group sizes and the online format, impeded equal participation and connection.
  • Addressing these logistical issues is crucial for optimizing virtual interprofessional education.
