This study synthesized strontium lanthanum titanate (Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$TiO$_{3}$) microplatelets using a topochemical conversion method. These microplatelets show enhanced electrical and reduced thermal conductivity, making them ideal for textured thermoelectric ceramics.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Solid-State Chemistry
- Ceramics Engineering
Background:
- Two-dimensional perovskite microplatelets are crucial templates for epitaxial grain growth in textured ceramics.
- Strontium lanthanum titanate (Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$TiO$_{3}$) is a promising material for thermoelectric applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the topochemical microcrystal conversion mechanism of Aurivillius Bi$_{4}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ to (001) oriented Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$TiO$_{3}$ microplatelets.
- To characterize the morphology, phase evolution, and thermoelectric properties of the synthesized Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$TiO$_{3}$ microplatelets.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of (001) oriented Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$TiO$_{3}$ microplatelets from Bi$_{4}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ precursors via molten salt reaction.
- Analysis of reaction interface, morphology development, and phase composition at various temperatures (above 753 °C, 950 °C, 1150 °C).
- Measurement of electrical conductivity (carrier concentration, mobility) and thermal conductivity.
Main Results:
- Topochemical nucleation and conversion of Bi$_{4}$Ti$_{3}$O$_{12}$ to Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$TiO$_{3}$ were observed above 753 °C.
- At 1150 °C, Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$TiO$_{3}$ microplatelets retained high aspect ratio with enhanced electrical conductivity (3.518 × 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ carrier concentration, 8.460 cm$^{2}$·V$^{-1}$·s$^{-1}$ mobility).
- Significantly decreased thermal conductivity was achieved, ranging from 5.65 W·m$^{-1}$·K$^{-1}$ at 300 K to 2.54 W·m$^{-1}$·K$^{-1}$ at 1073 K.
Conclusions:
- The topochemical microcrystal conversion provides a viable route to synthesize oriented Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$TiO$_{3}$ microplatelets.
- These microplatelets exhibit excellent thermoelectric properties, suitable for template grain growth in textured thermoelectric ceramics.
- The findings pave the way for improved thermoelectric device performance through advanced ceramic processing.
