Summary

Narcissism, measured by the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), did not predict success in the U.S. Army Ranger Course. This study found no association between narcissistic traits and trainee enrollment or graduation rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if narcissistic personality traits predict entrance into and graduation from the U.S. Army Ranger Course.
  • To investigate the association between narcissism measures and military trainee success.

Main Methods:

  • The Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) was administered as part of the Ranger Resilience and Improved Performance on Phospholipid-bound Omega-3's (RRIPP-3) study.
  • The study involved 555 U.S. Army officers entering the Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course (IBOLC) with aspirations for the Ranger Course.
  • NPI scores and its three subscales (Leadership/Authority, Grandiose/Exhibitionism, Entitlement/Exploitativeness) were analyzed for associations with enrollment and graduation.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences in total NPI scores were found between officers who enrolled in or graduated from the Ranger Course compared to those who did not.
  • None of the three NPI subscales showed a statistically significant association with enrollment in or graduation from the Army Ranger Course.

Conclusions:

  • Contrary to findings in other nations, this study found no association between narcissism and success in the U.S. Army Ranger Course.
  • Narcissistic personality traits did not predict trainee success or failure in this U.S. Army cohort.
