Background:

  • This limits understanding of concurrent strain experiences among team members.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify concurrent strain episodes among OR team members.
  • To determine the triggers of strain during the intraoperative phase.

Main Methods:

  • An event-based, observational study was conducted.
  • 113 operations across 5 surgical departments were included.
  • A guided-recall method assessed strain episodes immediately post-operation.

Main Results:

  • 461 strain episodes were reported from 731 guided recalls.
  • 75% of strain episodes were experienced by only one team member.
  • Acute patient issues (58.5%) and observing others' strain (83.3%) were frequently experienced by multiple team members.

Conclusions:

  • OR team members typically experience strain in isolation.
  • Shared strain is more common when patient safety is implicated.
  • This can hinder the development of shared understanding within OR teams.
