1Faculty of Nursing, Suan Dusit University, Bangkok, Thailand.
This study found that an Integrative Stress Reduction Program significantly reduced stress and improved sleep quality for caregivers of individuals with dementia. The program also led to a decrease in neuropsychiatric symptoms in persons with dementia.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Psychiatry
- Public Health
Background:
- Caregivers of older adults with advanced dementia experience high stress levels.
- Dementia caregiving presents significant challenges impacting caregiver well-being.
- Neuropsychiatric symptoms in persons with dementia exacerbate caregiver burden.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of an Integrative Stress Reduction Program for Thai caregivers of individuals with dementia.
- To assess the program's impact on caregiver stress and sleep quality.
- To examine the program's effect on caregiver-assessed neuropsychiatric symptoms in persons with dementia.
Main Methods:
- A single-blind randomized-controlled trial was conducted in Thailand.
- Family caregivers were randomized into an experimental group (5 intervention sessions over 4 weeks) or a control group (usual care).
- Data on stress, sleep quality, and neuropsychiatric symptoms were collected at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks postintervention.
Main Results:
- Caregivers in the experimental group showed significantly reduced stress levels (p < .01).
- Improved sleep quality was observed in the experimental group compared to the control group (p < .01).
- Caregivers reported a significant decrease in neuropsychiatric symptoms of persons with dementia in the intervention group (p < .01).
Conclusions:
- The Integrative Stress Reduction Program is effective in improving outcomes for caregivers of persons with dementia.
- The program demonstrated a positive impact on reducing neuropsychiatric symptoms in individuals with dementia.
- This intervention offers a promising approach to support dementia caregivers and their families.
