Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential causal effect of daily tea intake on the risk of developing gout using a two-sample Mendelian randomization approach.

  • Utilized genome-wide association study data from UK Biobank (349,376 individuals) for tea consumption SNPs.
  • Employed summary statistics for gout from the Chronic Kidney Disease Genetics consortium (13,179 cases, 750,634 controls).
  • Performed two-sample MR analyses, with inverse-variance weighted (IVW) as the primary method, alongside sensitivity analyses.

Main Results:

  • A genetically predicted increase of one cup of tea per day was associated with a reduced risk of gout (IVW OR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.82-0.98).
  • Consistent findings were observed in weighted median analyses (OR: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.78-1.00).
  • Sensitivity analyses did not reveal significant pleiotropy (MR-Egger P=0.95, MR-PRESSO P=0.07).

Conclusions:

  • This Mendelian randomization study provides evidence supporting a causal link between increased tea consumption and a reduced risk of gout.
  • Daily intake of an additional cup of tea may contribute to lowering gout risk.
