Vitreomacular interface abnormalities in the Ghanaian African

Vitreomacular interface abnormalities (VMIA) are common in Ghanaian Africans, but posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) may be less frequent than in Caucasians. No significant association was found between VMIA and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) grade.

Purpose of the Study:
- To describe vitreomacular interface abnormalities (VMIA) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in Ghanaian Africans.
- To investigate the correlation between VMIA and the grade of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

- A prospective, cross-sectional study involving adults aged 50 years and older recruited in the Ghana AMD Study.
- High-resolution SD-OCT scans (Macular Cube and line scans) were acquired for all participants.
- Vitreomacular interface (VMI) features were classified using the International Vitreomacular Traction Study Group system and correlated with AMD grade.
Main Results:
- The study included 624 participants (1248 eyes); 707 eyes had gradable scans for AMD and VMI.
- Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) was absent in 71.3% of eyes and did not correlate with age.
- Vitreomacular interface abnormalities (VMIA) without traction were observed in 12.2% of eyes and showed no significant correlation with AMD grade.
Conclusions:
- This study presents the first assessment of VMIA in Ghanaian Africans.
- VMIA appear common in this population, though posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) might be less prevalent compared to Caucasian populations.
- No significant association was found between the grade of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and the presence of VMIA.
