    Summary

    Dental cemental lines in Singaporean teeth do not appear to be deposited annually. This study found that counting these lines did not accurately estimate chronological age, suggesting limitations in their use for age determination.

    Background:

    • Incremental lines in dental cement have been proposed as a method for age estimation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and potential utility of incremental lines in the cement of extracted human teeth for age estimation in a Singaporean population.
    • To evaluate whether these lines are deposited annually and correlate with chronological age.

    Main Methods:

    • A study was conducted on 41 extracted teeth from Singaporean subjects.
    • Undecalcified roots were sectioned transversely, with some stained using alizarin red.
    • Incremental lines were counted by a single observer blinded to the subjects' actual ages.

    • The number of observed incremental lines did not consistently support annual deposition.
    • Age estimations based on line counts tended to be lower than the subjects' registered ages.
    • Inter-observer reliability for line counting was moderate (Pearson correlation coefficient r=0.73), indicating visualization challenges.
