Background:

Shared decision-making (SDM) is crucial for patient-centered care but is underutilized in primary care settings.
Existing training programs for general practitioners (GPs) to enhance SDM skills require systematic evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a rapid review of the literature to assess the effectiveness of GP SDM training methods and their impact on outcomes.

Main Methods:

A systematic literature search was performed across MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL databases.
Included studies were narratively synthesized, and their quality was assessed using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI).

Main Results:

Seven high-quality studies (mean MERSQI score 17.2/18) were identified.
Theory-based presentations were the most common training method (n=6).
SDM training positively impacted GP behavior (2 studies) but showed limited positive effects on patient outcomes (1 of 5 studies).

Conclusions:

GP SDM training effectively improves clinician behavior but has not consistently demonstrated positive effects on patient outcomes.
Training methods incorporating practical skills, like role-playing, showed promise but require further investigation.
Future research should focus on the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of practical SDM training approaches.
