Abstract:
A 74-year-old man presented to the hospital complaining of weight loss, increasing fatigue, and blurred vision. The abdominal ultrasonography initially revealed a massive lesion in the mesentery, which was later confirmed by a contrast-enhanced CT scan. The 18 F-FDG PET/CT scan showed a single, solitary hypermetabolic mass. The patient was finally diagnosed with Waldenström macroglobulinemia with mesentery involvement by the histopathological examination.
Insights
A rare case of Waldenström macroglobulinemia presented with significant weight loss and fatigue. Imaging revealed a large mesenteric mass, confirmed by histopathology as Waldenström macroglobulinemia involving the mesentery.
Area of Science:
- Hematology
- Oncology
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder.
- Mesenteric involvement in WM is uncommon, presenting diagnostic challenges.
Observation:
- A 74-year-old male presented with constitutional symptoms including weight loss, fatigue, and blurred vision.
- Initial abdominal ultrasonography identified a large mesenteric mass.
- Contrast-enhanced CT and 18F-FDG PET/CT scans confirmed a solitary, hypermetabolic mass.
Findings:
- Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of Waldenström macroglobulinemia.
- The tumor demonstrated significant involvement of the mesentery.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering rare presentations of Waldenström macroglobulinemia.
- Advanced imaging modalities are crucial for accurate diagnosis and staging.
- Early recognition of mesenteric involvement is vital for appropriate treatment planning.
