Background:

  • Peripheral high-flow arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) present a significant challenge in vascular treatment.
  • Arterial embolization is a key therapeutic modality for managing these complex vascular anomalies.

Observation:

  • This retrospective study analyzed 20 patients with peripheral AVMs treated with arterial embolization using Squid.
  • Treatments were primarily arterial embolization, with Squid used as the sole agent in 15 cases.
  • The anatomical distribution of treated AVMs included head and neck, extremities, uterus, and pelvis.

Findings:

  • Technical success was achieved in all cases.
  • 13 patients treated with Squid alone achieved total devascularization; 4 required subsequent surgical excision.
  • No major complications, microcatheter entrapment, or dimethyl sulfoxide-related pain were reported.

Implications:

  • Squid demonstrates efficacy and safety for peripheral AVM management, offering stable long-term results.
  • Its availability in varying viscosities (Squid-18, Squid-12) enhances its versatility for interventional radiologists.
  • The study concludes that Squid should be considered a first-line embolic agent for peripheral AVMs.
