Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Surveys02:16

Surveys

14.8K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Resident Training

Background:

  • Annual In-Training Exams (ITEs) assess Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) residents' knowledge and correlate with licensing exam success.
  • Standardized question banks and mock exams are educational tools to enhance resident performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a question bank and mock exam on OBGYN residents' performance on the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) ITEs.
  • To determine the correlation between the extent of question bank usage and CREOG ITE performance.

Main Methods:

  • A pre-post intervention study design was employed at Indiana University in 2018.
  • Resident performance was measured by year-to-year improvement in percent correct on CREOG ITEs before and after the intervention.
  • Data from 38 OBGYN residents were analyzed, excluding scores from residents without pre-intervention data or incomplete exam participation.

Main Results:

  • Following the intervention, all resident classes showed significant improvements in ITE scores: PGY1-2 by 6.6% (P < .01), PGY2-3 by 9.0% (P < .01), and PGY3-4 by 7.2% (P < .01).
  • A moderate program-wide correlation (R = 0.36, P = .046) was observed between the number of questions completed and the percent improvement on the ITE.

Conclusions:

  • Implementation of a question bank and mock exam significantly enhanced CREOG ITE performance among OBGYN residents.
  • These findings highlight the effectiveness of targeted educational resources in improving resident assessment outcomes.
