Surgical staff spend most time upright, with limited prolonged trunk inclination during procedures. Low-back pain in these workers is likely due to other factors, not just posture.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Ergonomics
- Surgical Science
Background:
- Low-back pain (LBP) is common among surgical staff.
- Prolonged trunk inclination during surgery is a suspected cause of LBP.
- Objective measurement of trunk posture in surgical assistants is needed.
Purpose of the Study:
- To quantify trunk inclination magnitude and duration in surgical assistants during procedures.
- To investigate the relationship between trunk posture and self-reported LBP.
- To identify potential causes of LBP in surgical personnel.
Main Methods:
- 91 surgical assistants wore an inertial measurement unit to track 3D trunk orientation.
- Exposure Variation Analysis assessed time spent in different trunk inclination angles and durations.
- Participants completed questionnaires on LBP history and perceived workload.
Main Results:
- Surgical assistants maintained an upright posture ( -10° to 10°) for 75% of surgery time.
- Strong trunk inclination (>30°) occurred for only 1.5% of the time, typically for durations under 60 seconds.
- Reported LBP was not correlated with the measured exposure to inclined trunk postures.
Conclusions:
- Prolonged trunk inclination is unlikely to be the primary cause of LBP in surgical assistants.
- Other occupational factors, such as load handling or prolonged standing, may contribute more significantly to LBP.
- Further research should explore these alternative factors to mitigate LBP in surgical environments.
