Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

8.5K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

    Area of Science:

    • Optical Communications
    • Wireless Networking
    • Signal Processing

    Background:

    • Line-of-sight optical camera communications (OCC) face limitations due to blocking and shadowing.
    • Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) links offer improved availability and mobility for wireless data transmission.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and evaluate a novel NLOS OCC system.
    • To enhance data transmission rates in indoor environments using diffuse reflection.

    Main Methods:

    • Data signals mapped into color pulse width modulation (CPWM) symbols using RGB LEDs.
    • A convolutional neural network (CNN)-based receiver for CPWM signal demodulation.
    • Experimental validation of the proposed NLOS OCC system.

    Main Results:

    • The proposed scheme effectively mitigates intersymbol interference caused by diffuse reflections.
    • Achieved a data transmission rate of 7.2 kbps.
    • Demonstrated reliable communication over a link span exceeding 2 meters, suitable for indoor applications.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed NLOS OCC system offers a viable solution for robust indoor wireless communication.
    • CPWM signaling combined with CNN demodulation enhances NLOS OCC performance.
    • The system provides a practical approach to increasing data rates in challenging optical communication scenarios.
