    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system disease characterized by diffuse demyelination.
    • MS presents with diverse clinical manifestations and potential disturbances in responsiveness.
    • The orienting reaction (OR) is a fundamental psychophysiological response to novel stimuli.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the somatic, autonomic, and electroencephalographic (EEG) components of the orienting reaction in patients with multiple sclerosis.
    • To compare the orienting reaction intensity in MS patients versus a healthy control group.
    • To explore correlations between orienting reaction disturbances and clinical parameters in MS.

    Main Methods:

    • A polygraphic study was conducted on 71 MS patients and 74 matched healthy controls.
    • The study measured somatic (EMG), autonomic (finger plethysmogram, galvanic skin reaction, respiration, pulse), and EEG (acoustic-evoked potential, EEG-blocking reaction) responses to auditory stimuli.
    • Clinical data including age at symptom onset, symptom types, and relapse frequency were collected for MS patients.
