  • To explore and determine the experiences of mothers undergoing embryo donation.

  • A qualitative conventional content analysis was employed.
  • 15 in-depth, unstructured interviews were conducted with 13 mothers receiving donated embryos during pregnancy or postpartum.
  • Data were analyzed using the Graneheim and Lundman method.

Main Results:

  • Analysis revealed 7 main categories of experience, including sociocultural constraints, feelings of insecurity in personal and family identity, and pressures.
  • Mothers reported significant insecurity regarding individual and family identities and faced societal difficulties.
  • Participants also experienced various pressures and hardships, alongside achieving relative tranquility.

Conclusions:

  • Embryo donation recipients face identity insecurity and sociocultural challenges.
  • Future care plans should address the identity crisis in families created through embryo donation.
  • Interventions should aim to mitigate socioeconomic pressures associated with embryo donation.
