Cerebral edema associated with meningiomas.

F Maiuri, M Gangemi, S Cirillo

    Surgical Neurology
    |January 1, 1987
    PubMed
    Summary

Brain edema in intracranial meningiomas correlates with clinical outcomes and tumor size. Histological features showed less significance, but tumor steroid receptors may influence edema. Further research is suggested.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurosurgery
    • Neuroradiology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Intracranial meningiomas are common primary brain tumors.
    • Cerebral edema is a frequent complication impacting patient outcomes.
    • Understanding factors influencing edema is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To correlate cerebral edema with clinical evolution, tumor size, location, and histology in intracranial meningiomas.
    • To investigate potential relationships between tumor steroid receptors and edema.
    • To compare findings with existing literature.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 50 patients with intracranial meningiomas.
    • Computed tomography (CT) scans were used to assess cerebral edema.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Correlation of edema degree with clinical data, tumor characteristics, and histology.
  • Main Results:

    • Cerebral edema degree significantly correlated with clinical evolution and tumor size.
    • Histological features of the meningiomas were less significantly associated with edema.
    • A potential correlation between tumor steroid receptors and cerebral edema was suggested.

    Conclusions:

    • Clinical evolution and tumor size are key factors associated with cerebral edema in intracranial meningiomas.
    • Histology plays a lesser role, but steroid receptors warrant further investigation.
    • Findings contribute to understanding meningioma pathophysiology and edema management.
