Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

90.2K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Obedience

According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Surveys

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Area of Science:

  • Health Professions Education
  • Health Equity
  • Academic Medicine

Background:

  • Physician Assistant (PA) education is a critical component of healthcare workforce development.
  • Ensuring diversity and inclusion within PA faculty is essential for a representative and effective profession.
  • Previous research has not fully elucidated career progression disparities among racial and ethnic minority PA faculty.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate disparities in academic rank promotion among racial and ethnic minority faculty within the physician assistant (PA) profession.
  • To examine the association between PA faculty race/ethnicity and career progression.
  • To highlight the need for inclusive mentorship and equitable practices in PA academia.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of pooled data from the Physician Assistant Education Association Program Survey (2015, 2017, 2019).
  • Logistic regression models were employed to assess the relationship between faculty race/ethnicity and academic rank (early-career vs. middle/late-career).
  • Models were adjusted for confounding factors including gender, highest degree, region, and years in rank.

Main Results:

  • Significant career progression disparities were identified, with Black/African American and Hispanic PA faculty being 44% less likely to hold late-career positions compared to White faculty.
  • These disparities persisted after controlling for key demographic and professional variables.
  • Slower career progression for minoritized faculty is linked to negative outcomes such as lower salaries, impostorism, burnout, and attrition.

Conclusions:

  • There is an urgent need to enhance diversity and inclusion efforts within the physician assistant (PA) profession.
  • Systemic biases must be addressed, and inclusive mentorship programs implemented to foster an equitable academic environment.
  • Prioritizing equity, diversity, and inclusion will cultivate a more diverse, innovative, and satisfied PA workforce, reducing turnover.
