Summary
Cribriform morular thyroid carcinoma, a rare tumor, presents distinct features differentiating it from papillary thyroid carcinoma. This case highlights its unique histomorphology and immunohistochemical profile.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Cribriform morular thyroid carcinoma is classified under tumors of uncertain histogenesis.
- This subtype exhibits distinct clinical, histomorphological, and immunohistochemical characteristics compared to papillary thyroid carcinoma.
Observation:
- A 59-year-old female presented with a large left thyroid lobe tumor initially misdiagnosed as medullary thyroid carcinoma via fine needle aspiration.
- Microscopic examination revealed a mixed cribriform and solid morular pattern, lacking papillary nuclear features, with squamoid morules, stromal hyalinization, and calcification.
Findings:
- The tumor measured 9.5 cm, with no evidence of extrathyroidal extension, lymphovascular invasion, or lymph node metastasis.
- Immunohistochemistry showed diffuse strong nuclear positivity for β-catenin, TTF1, PAX8, and estrogen receptor, with focal weak CD5 positivity. Calcitonin, thyroglobulin, synaptophysin, and CDX2 were negative.
Implications:
- This case underscores the importance of recognizing cribriform morular thyroid carcinoma as a distinct entity.
- Understanding its unique histological and immunohistochemical profile is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.

The Thyroid Gland
3.9K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Abnormal Proliferation
4.5K
Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the...
