Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

8.5K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Key Elements for Plant Nutrition02:35

Key Elements for Plant Nutrition

18.8K
Like all living organisms, plants require organic and inorganic nutrients to survive, reproduce, grow and maintain homeostasis. To identify nutrients that are essential for plant functioning, researchers have leveraged a technique called hydroponics. In hydroponic culture systems, plants are grown—without soil—in water-based solutions containing nutrients. At least 17 nutrients have been identified as essential elements required by plants. Plants acquire these elements from the...

Pharmacokinetic Models: Comparison and Selection Criterion

79
Physiological and compartmental models are valuable tools used in studying biological systems. These models rely on differential equations to maintain mass balance within the system, ensuring an accurate representation of the dynamic processes at play.
Physiological models take a detailed approach by considering specific molecular processes. They can predict drug distribution, metabolism, and elimination changes, providing a comprehensive understanding of how drugs interact with the body.

Multiple Regression01:25

Multiple Regression

3.0K
Multiple regression assesses a linear relationship between one response or dependent variable and two or more independent variables. It has many practical applications.
Farmers can use multiple regression to determine the crop yield based on more than one factor, such as water availability, fertilizer, soil properties, etc. Here, the crop yield is the response or dependent variable as it depends on the other independent variables. The analysis requires the construction of a scatter plot...

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Science
  • Agronomy
  • Crop Modelling

Background:

  • Simulating crop performance aids in understanding and adopting neglected and underutilised crops.
  • A significant barrier to modelling these crops is the scarcity of experimental data.
  • No prior effort has been made to compile sub-species crop data specifically for modelling underutilised crops.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop the first database for crop modelling data focused on European underutilised crops.
  • To address the knowledge gap hindering the adoption of neglected crops in conventional agrifood systems.
  • To create a foundational dataset for future crop modelling initiatives.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study identified crops with potential across the European Union (EU).
  • Over 500 agronomic studies from 1972-2022 across European agroclimatic zones were analysed.
  • A structured dataset including crop phenology, yield, management, and environmental data was developed and curated.

Main Results:

  • The database contains essential information for calibrating basic crop models for any EU location.
  • It includes detailed experimental data on phenology, yield, management, and environmental factors for select underutilised species.
  • The curated dataset ensures data quality for modelling purposes.

Conclusions:

  • This database represents a significant step towards enabling crop modelling for underutilised species.
  • It will facilitate the simulation of crop performance and support the wider adoption of neglected crops.
  • The collated data will be integrated into CropBASE, the global knowledge base for underutilised crops.
