Non-destructive Tests for Concrete Strength01:12

Non-destructive Tests for Concrete Strength

123
The rebound hammer test, also known as the Schmidt hammer test, is a non-destructive technique for evaluating the hardness of concrete and, indirectly, the strength of concrete. It operates on the principle that the rebound of a spring-driven mass from a concrete surface correlates to the surface's hardness. The device comprises a mass within a tubular housing, a spring mechanism, and a plunger that strikes the concrete. Upon release, the energy imparted to the mass by the spring causes it...

Area of Science:

  • Sports Science
  • Biomechanics
  • Exercise Physiology

Background:

  • Current strength assessment tools for handball lack sport-specificity and reliability.
  • Functional electromechanical dynamometry offers a novel approach for accurate athlete strength testing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the absolute and relative reliability of three functional electromechanical dynamometry strength tests in handball players.
  • To compare the reliability between the dominant and non-dominant sides and between mean and peak force measurements for unilateral pullover, standing lift, and step forward tests.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen elite male handball players participated in a repeated-measures design over three sessions.
  • Isometric tests were conducted in session one, followed by incremental tests to failure in sessions two and three.
  • Measurements included unilateral pullover, standing lift, and step forward tests using a functional electromechanical dynamometer.

Main Results:

  • All tested exercises demonstrated high or acceptable reliability for both mean and peak strength (ICC = .83-.97).
  • Negligible side effects were observed, with minor exceptions in left-side peak force for unilateral pullover and step forward tests.
  • Reliability differences were noted between right/left sides and peak/mean force for most exercises, except for peak force in unilateral pullover and step forward.

Conclusions:

  • The developed functional electromechanical dynamometry tests are reliable for assessing handball player strength performance.
  • These tests can be integrated into regular training to monitor physical performance and individualize player load.
  • This technology provides an opportunity for personalized training adjustments in elite handball athletes.
