Cohesion01:07

Cohesion

54.3K
Cohesion is the attraction between molecules of the same type, such as water molecules. Water molecules have an overall neutral charge but are polar molecule. An oxygen atom in one water molecule has a partial negative charge that can bind to a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge in a second water molecule, forming a hydrogen bond. Each water molecule can form up to four hydrogen bonds with other water molecules. Hydrogen bonds are responsible for water's cohesive nature.

Nursing Assessment

The two sources for collecting information are primary and secondary. After gathering information, interpretation and validation help to complete the data. The purpose of assessment is to establish data with the initial information, to interpret data about the patient's perceived needs and health problems, and to respond to these problems identified.

Cognitive Dissonance

32.6K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Area of Science:

  • Military Psychology
  • Organizational Behavior
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Harmful behaviors and unit climate significantly impact military readiness and soldier well-being.
  • The Vice Chief of Staff of the Army initiated a need for actionable insights into unit climate.
  • Existing assessment methods may lack a comprehensive, rapid, and triangulated approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the methodology and implementation of the Cohesion Assessment Team (CAT) assessment.
  • To provide battalion and brigade command teams with actionable data on unit climate.
  • To identify key factors influencing unit cohesion and identify areas for improvement.

Main Methods:

  • Selection of two battalions within a brigade for assessment.
  • Multi-source data collection including Army metrics, expert observations, staff discussions, soldier surveys (~90% participation), and targeted interviews.
  • Rapid synthesis of onsite and survey data within one week.

Main Results:

  • The CAT provides actionable insights into unit climate and identifies harmful behaviors.
  • Assessment results are presented to command teams, highlighting areas for maintenance or improvement.
  • Summarized findings are escalated to higher echelons, including the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army.

Conclusions:

  • The CAT offers a distinct, non-attributional, and systematic approach to assessing unit climate.
  • The assessment empowers leaders to make informed decisions to enhance unit cohesion and readiness.
  • The successful pilot has led to the transfer of CAT responsibility to the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).
