Background:

Eating disorders (EDs) are understudied and misunderstood in men.
Personality traits are significant factors in the risk, onset, and maintenance of EDs.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the relationships between personality traits and risk variables for ED development in men.
To identify specific personality traits associated with ED risk factors in a male university student population.

Main Methods:

Utilized the Spanish versions of the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3) and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI).
Included 443 male university students (mean age = 22.16 years).
Employed correlation analyses and hierarchical multiple regression to determine predictive roles of personality traits.

Main Results:

Neuroticism was positively associated with drive for thinness, acting as its primary predictor.
Bulimia risk showed positive associations with neuroticism and negative associations with conscientiousness.
Body dissatisfaction was primarily predicted by neuroticism, with negative associations from extraversion and openness to experience.

Conclusions:

Personality traits are significantly related to the risk of developing EDs in male university students.
Neuroticism emerged as the most prominent personality trait associated with ED risk factors in this population.
