Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

359
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

39.0K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Self-Concept01:19

Self-Concept

31
Self-concept is the cognitive and emotional understanding individuals hold about their identity. It evolves through various developmental stages, beginning in infancy and maturing as children grow. This concept influences how individuals perceive their abilities, interact with others, and manage challenges throughout life.
Infancy and Emerging Recognition
During infancy, self-concept is virtually nonexistent. Babies do not distinguish themselves as separate entities and often mistake their...

Trait and State Self-Esteem

The term self-esteem is often used generically, to refer to how people feel about themselves. However, according to research, there are three distinct constructs that should not be used interchangeably (Brown & Marshall, 2006).

Adler's Individual Psychology01:28

Adler's Individual Psychology

759
Alfred Adler, a prominent figure in psychology, founded the school of individual psychology. In contrast to Freud's emphasis on sexual or aggressive motives, Adler suggested that individuals are primarily motivated by their purposes and goals. He believed that people strive for perfection rather than pleasure. Adler argued that individuals could creatively act upon their genetic inheritance and environmental experiences to shape their own lives, emphasizing conscious motivation over...

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

479
Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

Area of Science:

  • Psychological assessment
  • Organizational psychology
  • Personality research

Background:

  • Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) and Hogan Developmental Survey (HDS) are validated for organizational use but underutilized in basic research.
  • A need exists for efficient personality assessment tools in research settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce the Hogan Personality Content Single-Items (HPCS) inventory.
  • Evaluate the reliability and validity of HPCS for measuring HPI and HDS content subscales.
  • Explore the utility of single-item scales in personality assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Developed HPCS with one item per HPI/HDS content subscale (74 items total).
  • Assessed reliability (retest, self-other, other-other agreement).
  • Examined convergent validity with full HPI/HDS scales and criterion-related validity.

Main Results:

  • HPCS demonstrated adequate item-level retest reliability.
  • Both self-other and other-other agreement were satisfactory.
  • HPCS showed convergent correlations with corresponding full HPI/HDS scales.
  • HPCS and full HPI/HDS related similarly to other variables.

Conclusions:

  • HPCS is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring HPI and HDS content subscales.
  • HPCS offers a time-efficient alternative to full inventories in certain research contexts.
  • Findings inform best practices for developing and using single-item scales.
