Traditional Formulations (TFs) show promise as an inexpensive option to inhibit severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). These TFs may help manage COVID-19 symptoms and biomarkers when used alone or with standard care.
Area of Science:
- Integrative medicine and pharmacology
- Infectious disease research
- Traditional medicine systems
Background:
- The COVID-19 pandemic necessitates exploring diverse therapeutic avenues.
- Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani systems are considered for their potential preventive and therapeutic roles.
- Traditional Formulations (TFs) are being investigated as complementary options.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of standalone or integrative Traditional Formulations (TFs) in managing COVID-19.
- To assess the impact of TFs on clinical symptoms and key biomarkers associated with COVID-19.
Main Methods:
- A systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 1646 COVID-19 patients.
- Studies compared standalone/integrative TFs (decoction, tablet, powder) against placebo plus standard care or standard care alone.
- Data extraction and assessment were performed by three independent reviewers.
Main Results:
- Traditional Formulations (TFs) demonstrated a potential to inhibit severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) compared to controls.
- Observed effects included increased fever and cough, decreased dyspnea, myalgia, headache, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).
- C-reactive protein (CRP) showed no significant change, while D-dimer slightly increased with TF use.
Conclusions:
- Integrative or standalone Traditional Formulations (TFs) represent a potentially cost-effective strategy for inhibiting SARS-CoV-2.
- TFs may serve as a valuable preventive and therapeutic option for managing COVID-19 and its associated clinical manifestations.

Pneumonia IV: Management
Bacterial Pneumonia Treatment
For bacterial pneumonia, antibiotics serve as the cornerstone of therapy. Initial treatment often begins with empirical antibiotics, tailored to the anticipated causative organism and adjusted based on culture results. Key antibiotic choices include:
