Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate behavioral and cortical responses in low-frequency brain rhythms during a HLJ task.
  • Examine how first-person vs. third-person perspectives influence perception and brain activity.
  • Identify specific brain oscillatory patterns associated with different perspectives.

Main Methods:

  • 11 healthy, right-handed participants performed a HLJ task with 80 visual hand stimuli.
  • Stimuli varied in side (right/left) and perspective (1st/3rd person).
  • Electroencephalography (EEG) analyzed behavioral outcomes and brain oscillatory characteristics (frequency, amplitude).

Main Results:

  • Third-person perspective led to higher reaction times and incorrect answers compared to the first-person perspective.
  • Event-related theta responses showed a significant location effect, indicating theta activity in parietal and occipital areas.
  • Increased delta power and phase were observed for first-person perspective stimuli, while increased theta phase was noted for third-person perspective stimuli (p < 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • A clear dissociation in low-frequency brain activity was found between self and other body perception.
  • Delta activity may be associated with self-body perception.
  • Theta activity might be related to allocentric (other's) perception during the HLJ task.
