Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Biomechanical Engineering
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease.
  • Varus alignment is a significant risk factor for knee OA progression.
  • Accurate measurement of knee alignment is crucial for diagnosis and treatment planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate markerless motion capture as a method for measuring knee varus alignment.
  • To compare femorotibial angle (FTA) measurements obtained via markerless motion capture with traditional radiography.
  • To assess the correlation between FTA and the severity of knee OA.

Main Methods:

  • Femorotibial angle (FTA) was measured using radiography and markerless motion capture in 34 knees of 19 OA patients.
  • Validation was performed by comparing markerless motion capture FTA with radiographic FTA.
  • Pearson's correlation coefficient and analysis of variance were used to assess validity and correlation with Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) classification.

Main Results:

  • Markerless motion capture demonstrated a strong, significant correlation with radiographic FTA measurements (r = 0.869, p < 0.01).
  • FTA measured by markerless motion capture significantly increased with higher Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grades (p < 0.05).
  • The method proved reliable in assessing varus alignment in the study cohort.

Conclusions:

  • Markerless motion capture is a valid and reliable tool for measuring knee varus alignment in patients with knee OA.
  • This technology offers a promising non-invasive alternative to radiography for clinical assessment.
  • Accurate alignment measurement using markerless motion capture can aid in better management of knee OA.
