Force and Momentum01:17

Force and Momentum

15.9K
Force and momentum are intimately related. Force acting over time can change momentum, and Newton's second law of motion can be stated in its most broadly applicable form in terms of momentum. Momentum can be applied to systems where the mass is changing, such as rockets, as well as to systems of constant mass. Also, momentum continues to be a key concept in the study of atomic and subatomic particles in quantum mechanics. One can consider systems with varying mass in some detail; however,...

Average and Instantaneous Velocity Vectors01:12

Average and Instantaneous Velocity Vectors

6.2K
To calculate other physical quantities in kinematics, the time variable must be introduced. The time variable not only allows us to state where an object is (its position) during its motion, but also how fast it’s moving. The speed at which an object is moving is given by the rate at which the position changes with time. For each position, a particular time is assigned. If the details of the motion at each instant are not important, the rate is usually expressed as the average velocity v.

Rapidly Varying Flow01:24

Rapidly Varying Flow

64
Rapidly varying flow (RVF) in open channels is characterized by abrupt changes in flow depth over a short distance, with the rate of depth change relative to distance often approaching unity. These flows are inherently complex due to their transient and multi-dimensional nature, making exact analysis difficult. However, approximate solutions using simplified models provide valuable insights into their behavior.Key Features of Rapidly Varying FlowRVF is commonly observed in scenarios involving...

Turbulent Flow01:24

Turbulent Flow

197
Turbulent flow is characterized by unpredictable fluctuations in velocity and pressure, which result in a chaotic fluid movement distinct from the orderly patterns of laminar flow. While laminar flow is governed by smooth, parallel layers with minimal mixing, turbulent flow exhibits highly irregular, three-dimensional patterns. This behavior arises due to instabilities in the fluid's velocity profile, and amplifies as the flow velocity increases. Minor disturbances, known as turbulent...

Velocity and Acceleration in Steady and Unsteady Flow01:11

Velocity and Acceleration in Steady and Unsteady Flow

108
In fluid mechanics, velocity and acceleration are key concepts for analyzing particle motion in both steady and unsteady flow. Consider a fluid particle moving along a pathline, where its velocity depends on its position and time. The particle's acceleration is obtained by differentiating the velocity with respect to time.
The acceleration can be generalized to any point in the flow, and expressed as components along three perpendicular directions, representing changes in velocity over...

Irrotational Flow01:28

Irrotational Flow

462
Irrotational flow is characterized by fluid motion where particles do not rotate around their axes, resulting in zero vorticity. For a flow to be irrotational, the curl of the velocity field must be zero. This imposes specific conditions on velocity gradients. For instance, to maintain zero rotation about the z-axis, the gradient condition:

Summary

Vortex formation time (VFT) can help distinguish athletic heart adaptations from disease. Vigorous exercise in female athletes significantly increases VFT compared to controls, suggesting its potential as a screening tool.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Sports Medicine
  • Physiology

Background:

  • Vigorous physical activity induces cardiac adaptations that can mimic pathological changes.
  • Accurate differentiation between adaptive and pathological cardiac alterations in athletes is crucial.
  • Vortex formation time (VFT) is an emerging echocardiographic parameter for assessing diastolic function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate VFT differences in female athletes with varying training levels.
  • To assess VFT as a potential tool for identifying training-induced cardiac adaptations.

Main Methods:

  • Echocardiography-Doppler analysis was used to calculate VFT.
  • VFT was determined using left ventricular ejection fraction, end-diastolic volume to mitral annulus diameter ratio, and atrial contraction volume to total inflow ratio.
  • Study included professional handball players, middle-aged female athletes, and their respective control groups.

Main Results:

  • Both professional handball players and middle-aged female athletes showed significantly increased VFT compared to controls.
  • Statistically significant differences in VFT were observed between handball players and middle-aged female athletes.
  • These findings suggest VFT is influenced by the level of physical activity.

Conclusions:

  • VFT is elevated in female athletes, indicating cardiac adaptation to training.
  • VFT shows potential as a non-invasive screening tool for cardiac adaptations in athletes.
  • This method may aid in distinguishing physiological cardiac remodeling from pathological conditions.
