Background:

  • Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is a preferred minimally invasive approach for localized prostate cancer.
  • The avatera™ system represents a new platform for RARP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the initial clinical experience and feasibility of the avatera™ system for RARP.
  • To assess surgical outcomes, complications, and early functional results.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of fourteen patients undergoing RARP with the avatera™ system.
  • Data collected included operative times, blood loss, complications, positive surgical margins, and 3-month functional outcomes (continence and erectile function).

Main Results:

  • All fourteen RARP procedures were completed successfully without conversion to open or laparoscopic surgery.
  • Median operative times were: draping 9.5 min, docking 10 min, console 103.5 min.
  • No major complications or transfusions were required. Median hemoglobin drop was 1.95 g/dL. Two patients had positive surgical margins. At 6 months, 78.6% were continent and 77.7% of nerve-sparing cases reported adequate erections for intercourse.

Conclusions:

  • RARP with the avatera™ system is feasible, safe, and efficient for localized prostate cancer.
  • The system demonstrated successful surgical completion with acceptable functional outcomes and minimal complications in this initial series.
  • Early results support the use of the avatera™ system for RARP, aligning with literature benchmarks.
