    Summary

    Thyroglobulin autoantibodies were detected in sera from lepromatous leprosy (LL) patients. A higher prevalence was observed in LL patients experiencing erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL).

    Background:

    • Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease primarily affecting the skin and peripheral nerves.
    • Autoimmune phenomena can occur in leprosy patients, potentially complicating the disease course.
    • Thyroglobulin autoantibodies are associated with autoimmune thyroid diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of thyroglobulin autoantibodies in patients with lepromatous leprosy (LL).
    • To determine if there is an association between thyroglobulin autoantibodies and erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) in LL patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Sera from 205 lepromatous leprosy patients were analyzed.
    • The tanned red cell haemagglutination technique was employed to detect thyroglobulin autoantibodies.

    Main Results:

    • Thyroglobulin autoantibodies were detected in 6 out of 182 sera from LL patients without ENL.
    • A higher prevalence was found in LL patients with ENL, with 5 out of 23 sera testing positive.
    • This suggests a potential link between autoimmune responses and ENL in leprosy.

    Conclusions:

    • Thyroglobulin autoantibodies are present in a subset of lepromatous leprosy patients.
    • The presence of these autoantibodies may be more common in LL patients who develop erythema nodosum leprosum.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the role of thyroglobulin autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of leprosy and its complications.
