Connective Tissue Cell Types

Connective tissue develops from the mesoderm of a developing embryo and consists of cells, fibers, and ground substance: a gel-like material containing large complexes of carbohydrates and proteins. Background:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of viscosupplementation in managing pain, limb functionality, and quality of life in patients with hemophilic arthropathy.

  • Searches were performed across multiple databases (PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, etc.) using specific keywords related to hemophilia and viscosupplementation.
  • Data from 10 selected articles, encompassing 297 joints in 177 patients, were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Viscosupplementation demonstrated positive outcomes in alleviating pain associated with hemophilic arthropathy.
  • Improvements in functional capacity and overall quality of life were observed in patients receiving treatment.
  • No significant adverse effects were reported, indicating a favorable safety profile.

Conclusions:

  • Despite limited existing evidence, viscosupplementation, particularly with hyaluronic acid, shows potential as an effective and safe therapeutic strategy for hemophilic arthropathy.
  • Further research is warranted to solidify the role of viscosupplementation in HA management.
