Only 20.5% of Taiwanese workers exercise regularly. Enhancing exercise self-efficacy (ESE) and perceived behavioral control, while reducing barriers, are key strategies for workplace health promotion.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Behavioral Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Regular physical activity is crucial for worker well-being.
- Understanding health behavior models is vital for designing effective interventions.
- Taiwanese workers exhibit low rates of regular exercise.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the effectiveness of exercise self-efficacy (ESE), the Health Belief Model (HBM), and the Theory of Planned Behavior (PBT) in explaining regular exercise among Taiwanese workers.
- To identify key components across these models that predict exercise behavior.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study design.
- Questionnaire assessing regular exercise, demographics, ESE, HBM, and PBT scores.
- 400 full-time Taiwanese workers participated.
Main Results:
- Only 20.5% of participants exercised regularly.
- Individually, ESE, HBM components (perceived benefits, barriers), and PBT components (attitude, perceived behavioral control) were associated with regular exercise.
- When analyzed together, ESE explained the most variance in regular exercise levels.
- A combined model including ESE, perceived barriers, attitude, and perceived behavioral control showed significant associations with regular exercise.
Conclusions:
- Low regular exercise rates among workers necessitate targeted workplace health promotion.
- Strategies should focus on enhancing exercise self-efficacy and perceived behavioral control.
- Addressing perceived barriers to exercise is crucial for improving adherence.

Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body.
