Summary
Jute stick waste was transformed into microcrystalline cellulose-based hydrogels for efficient dye and metal ion removal. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel showed superior adsorption capacity for methylene blue dye.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Environmental Chemistry
- Polymer Chemistry
Background:
- Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a sustainable biopolymer. Jute sticks, an agricultural waste, are a potential source for MCC.
- Developing efficient and eco-friendly adsorbents is crucial for wastewater treatment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate MCC from jute sticks and synthesize sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC).
- To prepare and characterize MCC-based hydrogel (MCCH) and Na-CMC-based hydrogel (Na-CMCH) using epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a crosslinker.
- To evaluate the adsorption performance of MCCH and Na-CMCH for methylene blue (MB) dye and metal ions from aqueous solutions and industrial wastewater.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of MCC from jute sticks and synthesis of Na-CMC.
- Chemical crosslinking of MCC and Na-CMC with ECH to form hydrogels (MCCH and Na-CMCH).
- Characterization using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDS. Adsorption studies using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin models.
Main Results:
- Both MCCH and Na-CMCH followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. MCCH adsorption fitted the Freundlich model, while Na-CMCH fitted the Langmuir model.
- Na-CMCH exhibited a significantly higher maximum adsorption capacity (196.46 mg/g) for MB compared to MCCH (23.73 mg/g).
- Na-CMCH demonstrated high removal efficiency for MB (58.73%) from aqueous solutions and industrial wastewater, and effectively reduced priority metal ions.
Conclusions:
- Jute stick-derived MCC and Na-CMC are effective precursors for synthesizing hydrogel adsorbents.
- Na-CMCH is a highly efficient adsorbent for removing methylene blue dye and heavy metals from industrial wastewater.
- This study highlights the valorization of agricultural waste into valuable materials for environmental remediation.
