Background:

  • Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a neurovascular condition causing neck and upper extremity pain due to compression.
  • Previous studies suggest a link between patient allergies and surgical outcomes.
  • The relationship between allergies and outcomes in TOS surgery requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the association between patient-reported allergies and postoperative patient-reported outcome (PRO) scores following surgical decompression for TOS.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective chart review identified patients who underwent TOS decompression.
  • Seventy-five patients completed five telephone-administered PRO questionnaires.
  • Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze associations between allergies, PROs, and demographic variables.

Main Results:

  • A significant correlation was observed between the number of reported allergies and worse PRO scores on the QuickDASH, Cervical Brachial Symptom Questionnaire, Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation, and visual analogue scale.
  • Allergies were also significantly associated with female sex and a higher number of medications.
  • Specifically, women undergoing TOS surgery showed a significant association between allergies and worse PRO scores.

Conclusions:

  • Increased patient-reported allergies are significantly linked to diminished PRO scores in women after TOS surgical decompression.
  • Understanding this correlation can improve physician-patient counseling regarding expected surgical outcomes.
  • Further research may explore the underlying mechanisms of this association.
