Microvessel density (MVD) in colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues can predict vascular invasion (VI). Higher MVD levels indicate a greater risk of VI, suggesting MVD as a potential prognostic marker.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate microvessel density (MVD) as a potential predictive marker for vascular invasion (VI) in colorectal adenocarcinoma.
  • To determine the optimal cut-off value of MVD for predicting VI.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 73 colorectal adenocarcinoma specimens, excluding those with prior radiation or anti-angiogenic therapy.
  • Tumor MVD quantified via CD34 staining and counting endothelial cells.
  • Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to determine MVD's predictive accuracy for VI.

Main Results:

  • Vascular invasion (VI) was present in 23.3% of specimens.

  • Microvessel density (MVD) serves as an angiogenic marker with potential as a predictive marker for vascular invasion (VI) in colorectal cancer.
  • MVD measurement can aid in risk stratification and potentially inform treatment decisions.
