Background:

Registered nurses (RNs) are the largest healthcare workforce segment with unique occupational health risks.
Understanding injury incidence, costs, and causes is crucial for RNs' well-being and healthcare system efficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the incidence, cost, and causes of occupational injuries among RNs in Washington State.
To quantify the cumulative cost and burden of specific injury types relative to all RN injuries.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 13 years (2007-2019) of Washington State workers' compensation (WC) claims data for RNs.
Calculation of annual mean injury incidence and costs, stratified by nature, source, and event/exposure.
Use of negative binomial regression to analyze injury incidence trends over time.

Main Results:

10,839 WC claims totaling over $65 million were filed by RNs between 2007-2019.
No significant trend in overall injury incidence was observed.
Bodily reaction/exertion, contact with objects/equipment, falls, and assaults were the most common injury exposures.

Conclusions:

This study provides a comprehensive overview of occupational injury incidence and costs among RNs.
High-cost, high-frequency injuries include musculoskeletal, sharp, and violence-related claims, indicating key areas for intervention.
Findings can guide policymakers, health systems, and nurse leaders in developing targeted occupational health and prevention programs.
