Physiological, low-grade 68Gallium-PSMA-11 (68Ga-PSMA-11) uptake in dural sinuses is a common finding during prostate cancer imaging. This uptake is linked to blood pool activity and should not be mistaken for disease.
Area of Science:
- Nuclear Medicine
- Radiology
- Oncology
Background:
- Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT is a key imaging modality for prostate cancer.
- Dural sinus uptake of radiotracers can sometimes be challenging to interpret.
Purpose of the Study:
- To characterize previously unreported physiological uptake of 68Ga-PSMA-11 in the dural sinuses.
- To establish the relationship between dural sinus uptake and blood pool activity.
- To provide guidance for differentiating physiological from pathological uptake.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of patients undergoing 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT for prostate cancer evaluation.
- Quantification of tracer uptake in dural sinuses and superior vena cava.
- Correlation analysis between SUVmax values.
Main Results:
- Hitherto unreported physiological low-grade 68Ga-PSMA-11 uptake was observed in the dural sinuses.
- A strong positive correlation was found between SUVmax in dural sinuses and SUVmax in the superior vena cava blood pool.
- This uptake is likely due to venous blood pool activity.
Conclusions:
- Low-grade 68Ga-PSMA-11 uptake in dural sinuses is physiological and related to blood pool activity.
- This finding should not be interpreted as pathological.
- Awareness of this physiological uptake is crucial for accurate PSMA PET/CT interpretation in prostate cancer staging and follow-up.
