Cytotoxic T Cells-mediated Immune Response01:27

Cytotoxic T Cells-mediated Immune Response

921
Cytotoxic T cells are a vital component of the immune system. They have the remarkable ability to identify and target antigens on infected or abnormal cells. These antigens often originate from intracellular pathogens such as viruses or abnormal proteins cancer cells produce.
Immunological surveillance is the ability of immune cells to monitor and eliminate infected cells with intracellular pathogens, neoplastically transformed cells, and cells with non-self antigens. Cytotoxic T cells and NK...

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Oncology
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Ophthalmic lymphomas are increasing, with Natural Killer/T-cell lymphoma (NKTL) being particularly aggressive.
  • Data on ophthalmic NKTL, especially in Western populations, remains limited.
  • This study analyzes primary ophthalmic NKTL using the SEER database.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the incidence, treatment, and survival outcomes of primary ophthalmic Natural Killer/T-cell lymphoma (NKTL).
  • To provide insights into this rare malignancy within the ophthalmic structures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2000 to 2020.
  • Identification of patients with extranodal NKTL originating primarily from ophthalmic structures.

Main Results:

  • Only 9 cases (0.2%) of ophthalmic NKTL were identified among 4540 ophthalmic lymphomas.
  • The median age was 67 years, with most patients receiving chemotherapy (88.8%) and radiotherapy (66.6%).
  • The 6-month overall and cancer-specific survival rates were 50.8%, with a significant decline by 2 years.

Conclusions:

  • Primary orbital NKTL demonstrates a severe prognosis.
  • Early diagnosis is crucial due to the aggressive nature of NKTL.
  • Further research is needed to improve outcomes for this rare cancer.
