Insights
This case report details a rare twin neonate with esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, and right lung agenesis who recovered after surgery. This contrasts with previously reported fatal outcomes in similar congenital anomaly cases.
Area of Science:
- Medical Genetics
- Pediatric Surgery
- Neonatology
Background:
- Esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula are severe congenital anomalies.
- Congenital lung agenesis is a rare developmental defect.
- Consanguinity in parents can increase the risk of rare genetic disorders.
Abstract:
A twin neonate with esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, and agenesis of the right lung from consanguinous parents is reported. The twin brother was normal. The baby eventually made a good recovery after delayed primary esophageal anastomosis. Thirteen similar cases have been reported in the literature but all died.
