The factor structure of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) for psychiatric inpatients
Abstract:
This study examines the factor structure of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) for a sample of psychiatric inpatients. The results are compared and contrasted with previous studies that have examined the factor structure of the MCMI. Factors identified for the inpatient sample include Interpersonal Withdrawal/Avoidance, Emotional Distress, Impulsivity/Negativism, Paranoid Distrust/Delusions, and Dependency/Submission. In general, results from this study are consistent with previous findings. However, there is evidence that the factor structure for this inpatient sample demonstrated more discrimination between symptoms and personality traits than had been demonstrated in previous studies.
Insights
This study analyzed the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) factor structure in psychiatric inpatients. Findings align with prior research but show greater symptom and personality trait discrimination in this group.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Psychometrics
Background:
- The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) is a widely used tool for assessing personality disorders and clinical symptoms.
- Understanding the factor structure of the MCMI is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning in psychiatric populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the factor structure of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) in a sample of psychiatric inpatients.
- To compare and contrast these findings with previous studies on the MCMI's factor structure.
Main Methods:
- Factor analysis was applied to the MCMI responses of psychiatric inpatients.
- The identified factors were compared to those reported in existing literature.
Main Results:
- Key factors identified in the inpatient sample included Interpersonal Withdrawal/Avoidance, Emotional Distress, Impulsivity/Negativism, Paranoid Distrust/Delusions, and Dependency/Submission.
- The results were generally consistent with previous MCMI factor structure studies.
- Evidence suggests the inpatient sample's MCMI factor structure exhibited enhanced discrimination between symptoms and personality traits compared to prior research.
Conclusions:
- The factor structure of the MCMI in psychiatric inpatients is largely consistent with previous findings.
- This study provides evidence for improved discrimination between psychological symptoms and personality traits within the MCMI factor structure for inpatients.
