Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the peripheral intravenous catheter insertion performance of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in a simulated setting.
  • To identify specific areas of deficiency in PIVC insertion technique among LPNs.
  • To highlight the need for improved training and skill assessment for PIVC insertion.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted in a hospital simulation center in Brazil.
  • Sixty LPNs participated in a simulated peripheral intravenous catheter insertion scenario.

  • Enhanced skills training, incorporating simulation and emphasizing supervisory roles, is recommended to bolster patient safety.
