Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

353
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Working Memory01:24

Working Memory

171
Working memory refers to a combination of components, including short-term memory and attention, that allow an individual to hold information temporarily as we perform cognitive tasks. It is an essential cognitive function that enables the execution of complex tasks such as problem-solving, comprehension, and reasoning. Unlike short-term memory, which simply involves the storage of information for a brief period, working memory involves the active manipulation and processing of this...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Science

Background:

  • Executive functions are crucial cognitive processes.
  • Existing measures may have limitations.
  • A new self-report scale, the SEFS, was developed to assess key executive function constructs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To psychometrically evaluate the Short Executive Function Scale (SEFS).
  • To assess the reliability and validity of the SEFS in a sample of undergraduate students.

Main Methods:

  • 717 U.S. undergraduate students completed the SEFS.
  • A subset of 156 participants completed the SEFS again after 2-3 months, along with the BRIEF-A and PHQ-8.
  • Confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent/discriminant validity were examined.

Main Results:

  • The SEFS demonstrated a good five-factor model fit.
  • Internal consistency (ω range: .68-.81) and test-retest reliability (ICC range: .75-.89) were acceptable for all scales.
  • Convergent validity with the BRIEF-A was significant for most scales, while discriminant validity with the PHQ-8 was low.

Conclusions:

  • The SEFS exhibits preliminary psychometric support.
  • The scale demonstrates acceptable reliability and validity for measuring planning, inhibition, working memory, shifting, and emotional control.
  • The SEFS is a promising tool for assessing executive functions.
