Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

27
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Blinding01:11

Blinding

2.5K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Area of Science:

  • Global Mental Health
  • Trauma Psychology
  • Implementation Science

Background:

  • Somalia faces a severe humanitarian crisis with high trauma-related mental health needs.
  • Access to advanced mental health services is severely limited.
  • Islamic Trauma Healing (ITH) is a novel, manualized, mosque-based intervention designed for war and refugee trauma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness and implementation of the ITH intervention.
  • To evaluate ITH's impact on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, somatic symptoms, and well-being.
  • To examine the train-the-trainers (TTT) model for scalability.

Main Methods:

  • A hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized control trial (RCT) involving 200 participants across three Somaliland cities.
  • Mosques were randomized to immediate ITH or a waitlist control condition.
  • Assessments included PTSD, depression, somatic symptoms, and well-being at multiple time points.

Main Results:

  • Primary outcome: Assessor-rated posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSD).
  • Secondary outcomes: Depression, somatic symptoms, and well-being.
  • Implementation outcomes and cost-effectiveness will also be examined.

Conclusions:

  • The ITH trial offers crucial data on an empirically-based trauma healing program for Islamic communities.
  • This approach may reach individuals who do not typically seek or have access to mental health care.
  • Findings will inform the broader application of ITH in similar contexts.
